Cafe Metropol

Restaurant Guide

On the eastern edge of Little Tokyo, in what has come to be known as the Artists District, CafÈ Metropol serves up top-notch salads and sandwiches, not to mention killer espresso, in a light and airy New York loft style environment. The cafÈ is off the beaten path. Nonetheless, it's a popular lunch destination with local workers who tend to be a hip bunch.

Recommended Dishes: With real estate it's all about location. With food it's all about ingredients. The owners of CafÈ Metropol know their ingredients, and they don't skimp. So while the ham sandwich might be a couple bucks more than at the coffee shop, the coffee shop isn't serving Black Forest ham on organic wheat bread with Norwegian Jarlsberg cheese. Deserving an honorable mention are the half dozen or so panini, served hot on crusty bread. The Verdure is a vegetarian's dream: portabello mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, sun-dried tomatoes and basil. Also a standout is the Marceaux, creamy goat cheese combined with prosciutto, red onions, roma tomatoes and cucumbers. In addition to sandwiches, the kitchen turns out cracker crust pizzas and hearty, colorful salads. Too bad every neighborhood doesn't have a place like this.
